Working with Evelyn has been a huge help to me. She created a safe and nurturing space where I learnt to build a better relationship with my body at my own pace. I was able to give my body a voice, to listen to and understand why I suffer from chronic pain. I would recommend to anyone.
— Rachel L, one-to-one participant

I offer one-to-one Somatic movement and Expressive arts sessions from my home studio in Bude and also work online. Each session is unique and may focus on a specific issue - pain or discomfort, feelings of stress, overwhelm or how a painful experience may show up in your body. My role is to be a companion and guide in this process towards a healthier integration between your body, mind and emotions.

Who is it for?

Somatic movement is supportive for anyone experiencing grief and loss, trauma, mental health challenges, chronic pain and illness, and for those who would like to deepen their awareness of the body and enhance the potential for deeper meaning in their lives. Somatic Movement therapy works with the body’s response to difficult life experiences, supporting individual’s feel more safe and grounded in the body, bringing the nervous system back into a state of balance and regulation.

What happens in a session?

Each session begins with a brief check in and space to name any challenges or life issues and the impact that these may have on you - emotionally, physically or mentally. I will lead you into sensory awareness explorations through tracking inner sensation, emotions, thoughts, feelings and images that may be arising. From there we may follow any emergent movement impulses, whether these are small or large, slow or dynamic. We may stay still or move around the space. We may have moments of silence and often, we will be in dialogue with what is being experienced in the body. Sometimes we use consensual clothed touch to deepen sensory feedback, invite new pathways of movement and expand our experience of ourselves. At the end of a session we will always work with finding places of support and health in the body to build upon strengthening our capacity for transformation and change. There will be time for self reflective dialogue, and writing / mark making if desired.

How Can it support me?

Somatic Movement supports our posture, our ability to breathe more freely, strengthens our bones, increases blood flow, reduces stress hormones and releases habitual muscular and mental holding patterns.

It promotes and deepens self awareness, self-esteem, and offers a safe place for the expression of feelings. In this slow way of working with the felt sense, we can start to uncover our unique themes, challenges and stories that are showing up in our postures, movements, gestures and emotional responses.

Somatic movement can help with pain relief through strengthening neuroplasticity and enhancing fluidity and ease of movement. It regulates the nervous system and the body’s response to stress and trauma, and increases vitality, promoting an increase in confidence, physically, emotionally and psychologically, and a sense of freedom, choice and control. For these reasons it is particularly effective in managing symptoms of anxiety, depression and pain.
